This soldier fly is widespread but very local, mainly in Wales and the southern half of England. It is usually found in fens and calcareous flushes where the aquatic larvae also live. Whilst it can occur in coastal districts, it is the most frequent of the black and white Nemotelus to be found inland (Stubbs & Drake 2001). The species has been recorded from only a few Essex localities. References
